Kaspersky employees love animals – many have cats and dogs of their own. Like every animal owner, they worry about the safety of their pets. So, the company examined seven different animal trackers to see if specific safety features affect pets. We all know that it's terrible to lose data to a vulnerability, but it's far worse to lose a pet. At a time when more and more technologies are helping to avoid data vulnerabilities, the main responsibility for an animal's safety lies with its owner.

Here we would like to remind you of a few simple rules that will help you become the most responsible and reliable pet owner.

Get yourself a strong and comfortable leash. The most durable models are made of canvas or leather. Choose a reliable leash, rather than the most fashionable one.

Bear in mind that dogs run away when they're afraid. A loud noise could be one of the factors that frightens them. If someone sets off fireworks nearby, your dog could become very afraid. Use your leash to keep the dog steady.

Hold the leash tight if your dog's on heat. Even the most obedient dogs can become uncontrollable at these times.

Treat your pet as you would treat your child. Don't leave it locked in a car by itself.

If you're driving your car and your dog is with you, you should have a special routine: only let the animal leave and enter the car after a certain command. This will prevent it from jumping out while the vehicle is in motion.

Train your pet to follow commands such as: "Come!" And "Sit!". If your dog gets a fright, your calm and cool actions will help the dog to overcome its fear and not run away.

If you have burrowing or hunting dogs, remember that they have natural hunting instincts. They could suddenly start chasing prey.

If you plan on leaving your pet with friends while you're away, tell them about your pet's habits.

Dangerous helpers

Kaspersky, together with the Opeepl Research Agency, surveyed 7,740 pet owners from 15 countries and found that every fifth person used a digital device to protect or monitor their pet. However, in almost 40% of the cases, use of such devices turned out to be unsafe. Incidents involved automatic thermometers overheating water in aquariums, automatic pet feeders breaking down leaving cats unfed, and monitoring devices that lost personal data.

In addition to research and educational work, the company participates in activities aimed at protecting animals. For example, its North American division sponsored the Woofstock festival for dog owners and their pets. In 2018, this annual festival in Hudson, Massachusetts, was attended by 2,700 people. Woofstock helped raise more than $45,000 for the Buddy Dog Humane Society — an organization that shelters (stray) cats and dogs. Kaspersky team was at the festival distributing frisbees, toys, balls and canned food for dogs, as well as cards with access codes for a free trial of Kaspersky Internet Security and information about pet safety risks caused by modern technologies. The team also gave away a GPS tracker as a prize in a charity lottery.

Make friends with your neighbors, especially those who are dog-lovers like yourself. This may come in handy if you need someone to help you search for your pet or even take it into their home.

Implant a chip. Unlike earmarking, the chip can and should be implanted in both pedigree and mongrel dogs, cats, ferrets and other domestic animals. A unique 15-digit code is stored in the chip's memory, which contains the numerical designation of the country, chip manufacturer and the animal itself. To see this information, you'll need a special scanner. Such scanners can be found, for example, in veterinary clinics which in turn have access to a single ANIMAL-ID database, where you can find the phone number, address and the owner’s surname.

Your dog's collar should contain the minimum basic information – the dog's name and your phone number. This could be engraved on the dog's metal tag, buckle or token. It’s best not to indicate the address since this information could be used by criminals.
