Kaspersky employees are used to feeling like heroes — after all, they are there to save the world. But even if you don’t create antiviruses and don’t fight malware, you can still feel like a lifesaver. How? By becoming a volunteer in your free time. There are thousands of programs across the globe, to suit any taste or budget (though sometimes volunteers have to pay for their own transportation and visas). We’ve chosen five volunteer activities, in which we ourselves would be happy to participate.

It’s hard to imagine a cuter project. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) welcomes volunteers from all over the world. You can even bring your teenage kids. You’ll clean the enclosures, take care of the animals, and prepare food for them. The center is located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, known for its delicious spicy food.

ideal entertainment for those who like digging into everything
The excavation site is a 40-minute drive from the famous Cusco. Traces of Incas and Wari, a culture even more ancient than the Incas, have been found in the town of Lucre. You’ll help archaeologists search for relics of these civilizations. No special training or education is required. Lucre is located in a valley, so altitude sickness won’t be an issue. Of course, while you’re there, you’ll be able to visit the renowned Machu Picchu and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Andes.

The Baikal Project has been making trails around Baikal safe and comfortable for tourists for more than a decade. These trails meander through the natural beauty of the area. A specific feature of the project (which is held four times a year) is that in addition to volunteering, you can participate in a family relationship development project or improve your leadership skills. You can also take part in the filming of a volunteer reality show.

Yes, it’s not a misprint. You won’t teach them English or math, but surfing. Yes, that means riding waves on a board. The only skill you’ll require is the ability to swim. The organizers will teach you the rest onsite, in Cape Town, South Africa’s most beautiful place. The main goal of the project is to promote the development of the local community, where lots of kids and adults live in unfavorable conditions. Many of them can’t swim and have never been to a beach, even though their homes are located close to the shore.

and learning to find your Zen
If you speak English, you can teach it in the ancient city of Luang Prabang in Laos. You’ll help very young Buddhist monks, as well as local students, to improve the quality of their education and their future career prospects. The location is surrounded by the unspoiled natural beauty of Laos: waterfalls, the Mekong River with its picturesque floating villages, and mountains. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
